I love food, maybe too much. I love thinking up different ways to make a good recipe better. I love eating the results, most of the time. I love looking at food and talking about food and dreaming about food.
I love Cooks.Com. It's a great place to go to get a lot of yummy stuff. As I read through some of the recipes, though, I can't help but be disappointed by the many listings calling for pre-packaged items (especially cake mixes). Part of the joy I get from cooking and eating is knowing that I've created something, perhaps something special and unique, and that I used my own passion as part of that creation. Throwing a box of cake mix in kind of takes it away a bit. Now don't get me wrong, I've had food made like this and even done it myself a couple times in a pinch, and it still tastes good, but I want my food to taste GREAT. I think I am not making any sense here, but I will plow on ahead anyhow.
It's hard to explain that while my taste buds may be singing the praises of that desert made out of a box, my soul is crying because its creator took the easy way out and it kind of diminishes the whole desert experience (for me). I know we're seriously busy these days and don't always have the time to create a culinary masterpiece, but I think it's important to stop and MAKE the time, at least once in a while, to do just that. It's just like stopping to smell the roses, only you're treating your taste buds rather than your olfactory. It's good for the soul. It's also probably better for your waistline, since processed and packaged foods are quite often higher in everything bad for you (that's why they taste good).
Yes, I am strange. You don't need to tell me that. Eat up!
